Side effects of Orlistat – Xenical

Xenical – Orlistat is the drug which effectively blends to the digestive system enzymes for splitting and successfully obstructing them from getting absorbed by the body. Xenical – Orlistat is generally taken with the meals so it can obstruct as much as one third of the body fat passing through the digestive system. The obstructed and broken down fats are in turn excreted through normal body process with the stools.

Like any other medications, Xenical – Orlistat too may have several side effects. The most commonly reported side effects of this drug include: oily spotting on the underwear, intestinal wind formation or flatulence, abrupt pressure for bowel movements, stools in fatty or oily conditions, more episodes of bowel movements, discomfort or pain in the abdomen and incontinence which means inability of controlling the pressure for passing stools.

Nearly 1 out of 250 and 1 out of 70 patients have reported one or more of such symptoms during the first year of Xenical – Orlistat treatment. Normally the probable side effects take place within the three months of beginning of this therapy and the same gets resolved just within one to four weeks in nearly 50 percent of the patients overall. However, the effects are even reported to have been lasting for 6 moths or more in some typical patients.

For averting such effects the usual diets should not have more than 30 percent of fats as the unabsorbed fats may cause majority of such symptoms. The patients having oxalate kidney stones are more prone to develop raised levels of oxalate in their urine which may in turn enhance the risk of kidney stones.
